Case study: Snapsheet’s virtual claims management technology

The insurtech space is rapidly evolving and one of the individuals leading the change is Liri Halperin Segal, CEO and co-founder of LeO, a startup that uses an AI-powered platform to automate sales and provide agents with personalized virtual assistants to help generate sales and leads.

In addition to writing for publications and speaking at industry events, she is also one of the partners of the P51 forum, which focuses on promoting and increasing diversity throughout a wide variety of workplace environments. She recently shared some of her insights on the importance of women leaders in all areas of business.

PC360: Women are taking more significant leadership roles in many industries. What are some of the challenges you’ve encountered as an executive in the insurtech space?

Insurtech is a very male-dominated environment, so as a woman in this space, I do find that I first need to build trust before I start the sales process. Even though this does add another layer, I try not to give it too much focus and simply strive to operate the best way I can as a CEO. Ultimately, I think people stop seeing me for my gender and start to see me for all that I have to offer — and once that happens, the playing field becomes level.

PC360: How can we encourage more women to become leaders in their respective industries?

We all need self-confidence and a little bit of fearlessness in how we approach our careers! Women should take advantage of opportunities when they are presented, even if they aren’t 100% qualified, and should be proactive about managing the way they advance in their careers. Believe in yourself, and don’t be afraid to take risks or step out of your comfort zone. Perhaps most importantly, don’t be afraid to take on roles that seem “big on you” — that’s how we grow professionally. And finally, be sure to express your opinions on a variety of occasions. Your voice matters and your expertise and opinions will bring the respect and appreciation you deserve.

PC360: Are there certain industries where you see particular opportunities for women?

Speaking specifically of my own company, I have to say that technology is an area where women really have the opportunity to make their mark right now. We’re currently hiring for several technical roles, and we would like nothing more than to fill them with qualified female professionals. But we’re just not seeing the diversity of candidates that we’d hope to achieve. As we look to keep our own workforce balanced, we have an eye out for talented female candidates — and I know my peers in other insurtechs have similar hiring priorities. This is a great moment for women to take the leap into more technology-focused roles, where they are currently wanted and needed more than ever.

PC360: What was the most valuable piece of advice someone gave you as you were building your knowledge and reputation?

My mother taught me to treat it as a game. When I took her advice, suddenly I felt like I could do anything and not every decision was life and death — I could be more creative and take more chances. I’d advise women everywhere to take this lesson to heart. Let the challenges wash over you and the successes invigorate you. If you enjoy what you do, others will enjoy doing it with you!
