The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and the World Health Organization (WHO) have confirmed highly pathogenic avian influenza has spread to at least 4 countries in South America.After Colombia, Peru, Ecuador, Venezuela and Chile have reported cases of avian influenza, which total some 25 outbreaks. Of this, 22 outbreaks occurred in Colombia between 19 October and 30 November in various rural areas. All of them affected backyard poultry production.
Thousands of pelicans have died
There is only 1 case recorded in each of the other 4 countries, all involving pelicans. In Peru, stunning images show hundreds of pelicans dead or suffering from the H5N1 virus, which causes the disease. According to the Peruvian press, more than 13,000 pelicans have died due to the pandemic.
